Certainly did not intend to go three weeks without a "weekly" blog post. In the meantime, I've seen Annie and Cinderalla. If you can, go see both.
I have not seen Annie since I developed a passion for creating musical theater, and I remember enjoying it, but what I didn't recall was how tightly constructed it is, how well paced, how thoroughly enjoyable from start to finish. In far too many shows, I'm looking at my watch an hour in, my whole body is saying, "This act should be over." But in well-constructed shows, the watch never gets looked at, and there was no watching-looking going on.
Lilla Crawford is simply not human. Amazing talent. Best Annie I have ever seen.
And then there's the song NYC. I used to not like that song. Felt like it dragged the whole show to a stop. At this Annie, it lit the place up. Is it because I so enjoy New York personally that I like it now, or was I just too dim to know how good it was? Both likely.
This is a first-rate production. Long may it run. It will be interesting to see what Jane Lynch does for sales.
OK. That's it and that's enough. I'll save Cinderella for another next post.
