Boy, Thursday was a great day. Michael Kerker at ASCAP and Roland Tec at the Dramatists Guild put together an unbelievable 90 minutes at Birdland Thursday afternoon.
First, Michael moderated questions on collaboration in writing for musical theater with Stephen Schwartz and Marsha Norman. Schwartz--Godspell, Pippin, Wicked, Pocahontas names about a tenth of his work (not to mention three Academy Awards). Marsha Norman won the Pulitzer Prize for ‘night Mother and a Tony Award for book and lyrics for The Secret Garden.
Fascinating insight on how collaboration works and how it doesn’t.
And if that weren't enough, they were followed by nine songwriters or songwriting teams performing one song each. The music ranged from hardcore musical theater to cabaret-style personal songs. Mad skills were on display.
