Thrilled to report that Christmas Letters won top honors at the Brookfield Theatre for the Arts Battle of Christmas Musicals!
The first step in the competition was being selected to be in it. With 15 candidates from all over the country, my collaborator Laura Bergquist and I were so gratified to be considered. Next, competition organizers winnowed the field to three shows who would each present 45 minutes of their musical on 4th of July weekend in Brookfield.
That event was so much fun and so well done.
Our competitors included a work by Noel Katz called The Christmas Bride based on a story by Charles Dickens. He brought nine excellent performers up from New York, and they put on a tight, good show. The other show came from Holly Reed in Texas. I knew both Noel and Holly from other events organized by the ever-active Carol De Giere. Holly's was a new work called Come Find Me getting its first tryout. It was an imaginative, whimsical work that turned the traditional Christmas "Santa and elves" story on its head.
The house was packed that night, and the audience was so welcoming and appreciative. Audience members cast ballots, and we were selected for a presentation of the full musical this holiday season. Can't wait.
Many, many thanks to Lou Okell, artistic director at Brookfield, and her staff, volunteers and performers. We had a ball!
OK. That's it, and that's enough.
